“THE BACK LOT” EXHIBIT IN WEST HOLLYWOOD

“The Back Lot” by Michael C. McMillen

We love to talk about Music and Art but also love exploring the history of Los Angeles.

In the heart of West Hollywood, along Santa Monica Blvd, is a permanent exhibit attached to the Formosa Lot Studios.

The studios at The Lot have a rich history, going all the way back to the silent films of the early 1920s.

The exhibit, “Back Lot”, is a recreation of a workshop office as it would appear in the mid-1930s.

At the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd and Poinsettia Pl, you will see 4 sculptures on the sidewalk, next to a garage with 3 binocular-style peep holes attached.

Peer into the binoculars to see the recreated studio workshop, including a typewriter, film reels, lights, and various props strewn about.

There’s also a TV playing clips from some of the early films created at the studio, which is pretty cool to see!

The exhibit “acknowledges the rich history of the site…it is the celebration of the mythos of movie making and a tribute to the collective creative genius ‘behind the scenes.’”

The site of this exhibit was originally a driveway and garage built in the 1930s for a movie producer.

The exhibit is on permanent display.
